European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed that the European Union is actively working to reach a preliminary trade agreement with the United States, with the primary goal of keeping tariffs as low as possible and offering businesses much-needed stability.
“We are working non-stop to find an initial agreement with the US to keep tariffs as low as possible and to provide the stability that businesses need,” von der Leyen stated.
She also acknowledged that EU-U.S. relations may never fully return to their previous state, reflecting broader changes in the global trade landscape. Still, she emphasized the EU’s commitment to strengthening and diversifying its international trade partnerships.
The two sides are expected to agree on a temporary arrangement in the coming days. However, this will likely serve only to maintain the status quo, as comprehensive negotiations are expected to continue beyond August 1.
