Germany’s retail sales fell 3.4% in real terms in July 2026 compared with June, according to provisional data. Nominal sales, which are not adjusted for prices, declined 1.7% month-on-month.
The figures point to weaker consumer activity and add to the latest macroeconomic news being monitored by financial markets.
Compared with July 2025, German retail sales were 2.5% lower in real terms, while nominal sales increased 0.3%. The gap between the two measures reflects the effect of prices on retail turnover.
Sector Weakness Across German Retail
Petrol station sales recorded one of the sharpest declines, falling 9.1% in real terms and 1.9% in nominal terms from June. The decline followed the end of the fuel discount that had been in effect during May and June.
Food retail sales decreased 0.8% in real terms and 0.5% in nominal terms month-on-month.
Non-food retail was weaker, with sales falling 4.8% in real terms and 2.5% in nominal terms from the previous month.
Online and mail-order sales also declined, falling 5.6% in real terms and 5.8% in nominal terms month-on-month. Compared with July 2025, online and mail-order sales were down 0.8% in real terms.
What the Data Means for the Economy and Euro
The broad-based decline suggests weaker consumer demand in Germany and could add to concerns about economic momentum. Traders following market analysis will be watching whether weakness in household spending is reflected in other German and Eurozone indicators.
The data could also influence expectations surrounding central banks, particularly the European Central Bank, although retail sales alone are unlikely to determine monetary policy.
For forex traders, weaker German consumption could put some pressure on the euro if markets interpret the figures as evidence of weaker economic growth. However, the EUR’s reaction will also depend on inflation, employment, ECB expectations and broader market sentiment.
Upcoming German and Eurozone releases can be monitored through economic calendar events, particularly indicators that provide further information about consumer demand and economic growth.
