Gold prices edged lower on Tuesday as the US dollar remained firm, while traders awaited upcoming US inflation data for clues about the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate outlook.
Spot gold fell 0.2% to $4,164.45 per ounce by 0201 GMT, after reaching a one-week high in the previous session. US gold futures for December delivery declined 0.1% to $4,187.90.
The dollar remained near an 18-month high reached in the previous session, making dollar-priced precious metals more expensive for buyers using other currencies.

US CPI and PPI Reports in Focus
Markets are turning their attention to the US Consumer Price Index (CPI), due Wednesday, followed by the Producer Price Index (PPI) on Thursday.
The reports could influence expectations for Federal Reserve policy and provide fresh direction for gold prices in the short term.
Kyle Rodda said the CPI report would be critical for gold. If inflation comes in hotter than expected, particularly in the core measure, it could increase expectations of an October rate hike and put further pressure on the metal.
Higher interest rates generally make yield-bearing assets more attractive relative to gold, which does not pay interest. However, the actual market response will depend on how the data compare with expectations and how investors reassess the Fed’s likely policy path.
Traders Assess the Federal Reserve’s Rate Outlook
According to CME’s FedWatch tool, traders were pricing in a 21% probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike in October and an 88% probability of an increase in December at the time of the report.
Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack said the central bank should move “relatively quickly” towards a more restrictive monetary policy stance to bring inflation under control.
Hammack said inflation had become broader-based and was beginning to influence companies’ plans for setting prices.
Her comments add to the debate over how firmly the Fed may need to respond to persistent inflation. The upcoming CPI and PPI reports could help shape market expectations, although neither the data nor the policy outcome is predetermined.

Geopolitical Tensions Remain in Focus
Geopolitical risks also remained on investors’ radar. Saudi Arabia said it was facing a new barrage of incoming fire and that Riyadh airport would remain closed for the time being.
The developments followed a deadly missile strike on a departure terminal on Saturday, which Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis claimed responsibility for.
Geopolitical tensions can influence demand for perceived safe-haven assets, including gold. In this report, however, the firm dollar and upcoming US inflation releases were the main immediate factors highlighted by market participants.

Market Impact: Inflation Data Could Shape Gold’s Near-Term Direction
Gold remains sensitive to movements in the US dollar and changing expectations for Federal Reserve interest rates. A hotter-than-expected CPI reading could strengthen expectations of tighter policy and weigh on gold, while softer inflation could reduce that pressure. Traders will also monitor the PPI report and geopolitical developments for further signals.
The direction of prices will depend on the incoming data and the market’s response, rather than on any single indicator alone.
